The central government of India has been making immense efforts in promoting Renewable energy sector. While the Industrial sector has successfully realized the benefits and cost savings with Solar, Residential sector is still lagging behind. MNRE (Ministry of New and Renewable Energy) too has been giving directions to the government in this matter, as a result of which, the Ministry of Power has given directions to simplify the subsidy process.
How much Subsidy is available?
As per government of India notification, 40% subsidy is available for rooftop solar projects with capacity upto 3Kw and 20% beyond that upto 10Kw. There has been no change in the amount of subsidy one gets. However, the subsidy would now be directly transferred to beneficiary’s bank account by DISCOM within 30 days of installation.
Solar Rooftop Capacity | Applicable Subsidy | Total Subsidy |
1 KW | @40% for 1 KW = ₹20,000 | ₹20,000 |
2 KW | @40% for 2 KW = ₹40,000 | ₹40,000 |
3 KW | @40% for 3 KW = ₹60,000 | ₹60,000 |
4 KW | @40% for 3 KW = ₹60,000, and balance @20% for 1 Kw = ₹10,000 | ₹70,000 |
5 KW | @40% for 3 KW = ₹60,000, and balance @20% for 2 Kw = ₹20,000 | ₹80,000 |
6 KW | @40% for 3 KW = ₹60,000, and balance @20% for 3 Kw = ₹30,000 | ₹90,000 |
7 KW | @40% for 3 KW = ₹60,000, and balance @20% for 4 Kw = ₹40,000 | ₹1,00,000 |
8 KW | @40% for 3 KW = ₹60,000, and balance @20% for 5 Kw = ₹50,000 | ₹1,10,000 |
9 KW | @40% for 3 KW = ₹60,000, and balance @20% for 6 Kw = ₹60,000 | ₹1,20,000 |
10 KW | @40% for 3 KW = ₹60,000, and balance @20% for 7 Kw = ₹70,000 | ₹1,30,000 |
Where do I find Installation Vendors?
The government aims to achieve 100GW of Solar Installations by 2022, out of which 40GW is expected to be from Rooftop Solar (preferably Residential sector). Considering the hurdles encountered in the process, the ministry has now directed that henceforth, it will not be necessary to get solar system installed from an authorized/listed vendor. An individual may install the system on his/her own or hire an outsider to do the same. They will need to inform the DISCOM after the installation with a photograph of the system installed.
This information can either be sent in writing or applied on the portal of respective State (link available from SPIN). Further, DISCOM will have 15 days time to install Net Meter at consumer premises and release subsidy within 30 days of installation.
Application Process
In order to avail subsidy in the new regime, one needs to visit SPIN (An Online Portal for Solar Photovoltaic Installation)
